FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Guilford College's women's tennis team concluded its season-opening event Sunday at the two-day, non-scoring Methodist University Invitational. A victory by the Quakers' third-doubles tandem of Dominique Crespo and Allison Hewitt highlighted Guilford's performance.
Crespo and Hewitt, both sophomores, advanced to Sunday's final by winning both matches in the round-robin portion of their draw. The Quakers' tandem met Virginia Wesleyan College's Victoria Torres and Stephanie Bittner in the final and pulled out an 8-5 victory.
Guilford's first-doubles pair of Haley Andrews and Allie Guy also reached the finals, but settled for second place after dropping an 8-1 decision to Shelby Bickel and Leigh Anne McAfee of NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke.
Crespo had Guilford's best singles result with a fourth-place finish in the second-singles bracket. Teammate Leah Meservey went 2-1 on the weekend and placed fifth in fourth singles.
Head coach Dave McCain's team competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Individual Tournament at Virginia Wesleyan Oct. 6-7.
