GREENSBORO, N.C. (12/13/10) -- Guilford College junior Jazlyn Gibbs earned her first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday. She also collected her second straight Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award, which is presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Gibbs, a 5-9 junior guard, averaged 19.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the Quakers' 1-1 week. She scored a team-high 18 points and shot 50 percent (6-12) from the floor in Guilford's Dec. 7 game at Roanoke College. Gibbs also had five rebounds and two steals in the game. She sparked Guilford's comeback win over Averett University two days later with a game-high 20 points, four rebounds and two steals. The contest marked her seventh game in double-figure scoring.
Gibbs ranks third among ODAC scoring leaders with a team-high 18.0 points per game average. She also averages 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Her 34.0 minutes per outing stand second in the league. Gibbs has led Guilford's scorers six times this season and has four 20-point games.
Coach Stephanie Flamini's club recorded a 5-3 record (1-2 ODAC) in 2010. The Quakers will take their final exams this week and return to action Jan. 4, 2011, when they host league-rival Hollins University at 7:00 p.m.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
