SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Guilford College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader at Sweet Briar College Saturday. The Quakers won the opener, 12-0, and the nightcap, 27-0. Both games were called after five innings.
In game one, Kimberly Keys hit her first homer of the year, a two-run shot in the third inning, among her three hits. She and Morgan Andrews (2-4) both finished with two RBI. Sarah Cutright also had two hits and Cynthia Hayes scored three times in the win. Jessica Burcham fanned four in two innings before giving way to Shelby Bowser (3-3), who also struck out four and earned the victory in the two-hit shutout.
The Quakers (16-18, 3-9 ODAC) set school records for hits (25) and RBI (25) in the nightcap. Their 27 runs rank second in school history. Guilford scored 13 times in the first inning and seven runs in the second. Only eight of the Quakers runs were earned, as six errors prolonged Guilford's batting.
Freshman Rachel Howard went four-for-four with four RBI and fellow rookie Alex Todd was three-for-four with three RBI. Fellow freshman Sloane King also had three hits, as did Keys and Cutright. Hayes belted her first college homer in the game. Brittany Donathan (2-2) picked up the win with three shutout innings and also had three RBI.
Brooke Scott had both of the Vixens (0-16, 0-12 ODAC) hits in game two.
Guilford wraps up a weekend road trip Sunday (4/15) at league-rival Randolph-Macon College.
