GREENSBORO, N.C. – Megan Williams' two-run, two-out single in the 10th inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent 15th-ranked Bridgewater College to a 6-3 softball win at Guilford College Monday. The victory gave the Eagles (24-4, 8-2 ODAC) a sweep of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader after a 5-2 opening-game triumph.
Bridgewater overcame an early 3-0 deficit thanks to the efforts of relief pitcher Summer Ramsey (4-0), who entered in the second inning and threw nine innings of shutout ball. The Eagles scored twice in the fourth and tied the game one frame later on Leigh Lam's two-out single.
In the top of the 11th, Heather Jenkins was placed on second base per international tiebreaker rules and moved to third on Lam's sacrifice bunt. Sara Heretick walked and went to second on Brea Hinegardner's ground out. Williams' singled to center, scoring both runners, and came around one batter later on Hillary Rees' triple.
Guilford (13-17, 1-9 ODAC) got runners to third both the eighth and ninth innings, but Ramsey worked out of the jams and then retired the heart of the Quakers' lineup in order in the bottom of the 10th.
Rees and Williams both finished with two hits and two RBI for Bridgewater. Jenkins singled twice and scored two runs.
Rachel Howard had two hits for Guilford, including a solo homer in the second, her second of the season.
Jenkins improved to 12-2 with a complete-game eight-hitter in the opener. Her solo homer on the first pitch of the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie. Melanie Lamb plated two insurance runs with a double in the seventh. Jenkins and Lamb both had two hits for Bridgewater, as did Heretick, who also homered.
