GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College split a softball doubleheader with visiting Ferrum College Saturday at Haworth Field. The Quakers won the opener, 4-3, and the Panthers took the nightcap, 12-1.
Guilford's Jessica Burcham (6-6) notched her team-leading sixth win of the year in the opener with a complete-game six hitter that included three strikeout and no walks. Only one of the Panthers' (29-11) runs was earned as they scored two unearned runs in the fifth to make it a one-run game.
Eight different Quakers (13-15) combined for nine hits in the opener, including Kimberly Keys, Ashley Boteler and Sarah Cutright, who each plated runs in Guilford's three-run first inning. Autumn Yoder's fourth-inning single scored what proved the winning run. Morgan Andrews had two hits for the Quakers.
Kaitlyn Culler improved to 15-2 and the Panthers banged out 18 hits in the nightcap. Culler yielded only four hits, walked none and struck out five. Ferrum scored in six of seven innings and capped its scoring with six runs in the seventh inning. Rachel Shumaker had four hits and scored three times. Chloe Brzycki and Karly Thompson both added three hits and three RBI. Hannah Shumaker and Kylene Culler also had three hits apiece.
Guilford hosts Bridgewater College Monday (4/9) at 3:00 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader rescheduled from March 25.
