GREENSBORO, N.C. – Logan Tollison had four hits and Amanda Warley added three hits, plus three RBI, in North Carolina Wesleyan College's 10-1 softball win at Guilford College Wednesday. The six-inning victory secured a sweep of the nonconference doubleheader after the Battling Bishops (14-14) took game one, 3-1.
North Carolina Wesleyan registered 14 hits the nightcap, including a combined seven from Tollison and Warley. Game one hero Meredith Mills added two hits and two RBI, which aided the pitching performance of Kelsi Bailey. Bailey (6-8) scattered six hits and yielded only a fourth-inning tally on Rachel Howard's two-out hit.
The opening game was a pitching duel between Guilford's Jessica Burcham and North Carolina Wesleyan's Leanna Fann. The Bishops took the lead on a second-inning sacrifice fly by Maria Seay, but Guilford tied the score a Morgan Andrews sacrifice fly in the fifth.
With rain starting to fall in the top of the seventh, Mills led off the frame with a solo homer to left center, which made it a 2-1 game. The heavens opened soon thereafter and following a 30-minute rain delay, the Battling Bishops added an insurance run on a single by Seay.
Burcham matched her season high with nine strikeouts, but the Quakers' offense could not take advantage of her pitching. Fann improved to 10-6 with a complete-game seven-hitter that included no strikeouts, but only one base on balls. Autumn Yoder had two of Guilford's six hits.
The Quakers are back in action Saturday when they host Ferrum College in a nonleague doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Guilford will recognize the team's four seniors prior to the 1:00 start.
