GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sarah Cutright's two-out, run-scoring single in the seventh capped Guilford College's three-run rally and gained a split of Sunday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader with Randolph-Macon College. The Quakers took the nightcap, 7-6, after the Yellow Jackets snapped Guilford's eight-game winning streak in the opener, 4-1.
Guilford (13-5, 1-1 ODAC) took advantage of three walks and two errors en route to a 3-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap. Cutright's RBI grounder in the third opened a 4-1 Quakers' margin, but Randolph-Macon (14-2, 5-1 ODAC) tallied twice in the fourth and went ahead 5-4 in the seventh on Morgan Greene's two-run double. Greene later scored on Laura Bauer's RBI single that gave the Yellow Jackets a 6-4 edge.
Guilford's Courtney Kozar opened the seventh with her second hit of the day and took second on Kimberly Keys' single. After a Julie Langseth popup, Ami Hutcherson singled home Kozar and drew Guilford within one, 6-5. Pinch-hitter Ashley Stacy's RBI grounder to short tied the game and moved Hutcherson to third with two away. Cutright blooped a single into shallow right field to send Guilford to its ninth win in 10 games.
Reliever Heather Lewis (9-2) took the loss in game two after throwing a complete-game six-hitter to win the opener. She allowed only one Quaker to second base for the first six innings before Guilford scored on Ashley Boteler's two-out RBI single in the seventh. Lewis helped her own cause at the plate with three hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning. Paige Smith also had three hits for Randolph-Macon, including a two-run double in the fourth. Greene and Lauryn Nanny both went two-for-three with two runs scored.
Guilford is back in action Wednesday (3/16) at league-rival Roanoke College.
