FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Methodist University used two big innings to sweep a softball doubleheader from visiting Guilford College Sunday and improved to 4-0 on the year. The Monarchs scored six times in the fifth inning of their 6-0 opening-game win and put up seven runs in the fourth inning of their 7-5 nightcap triumph.
The teams were scoreless headed into the home fifth of the opener when the Monarchs sent nine batters to the plate and scored six times. Methodist started the inning with four straight hits and scored two more runs on a bases-loaded walk followed by a wild pitch. A Quakers' error let two more runs cross and gave the hosts a 6-0 lead.
Alex Bass (2-0) scattered six hits and fanned three in her complete-game win. The Quakers (1-3) stranded seven runners.
Guilford had a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth when Methodist sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run inning. Katie Byrd's three-run double highlighted the frame, which included eight of the Monarchs' 15 hits in the game.
Byrd was 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Chapman had two more hits for Methodist and teammate Darci Martin went 3-for-4. Brandi Weaver (1-0) worked into the sixth inning to earn the win. Candace Piner threw 1.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball for her first save of the season.
Guilford plays again Wednesday (2/23) at Peace College.
