HAMPTON, Ga. – Guilford College juniors Andris Goncarovs and Chad Norton qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday at the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals hosted by Emory University. This is the first time the Quakers have sent two runners to the NCAA Championships.
Goncarovs finished third in the 160-man field at eight-kilometer Nash Farm Battlefield Park when he crossed the finish line in 25 minutes, 46.53 seconds. The time represents his second-best this season and the eight-best in Guilford history. Norton earned his second straight trip to nationals with an 11th-place time of 26:23.84, his second-best this season.
Guilford's David Cason placed 20th in 26:47.09, his second-best finish of the season and third-best of his career. Goncarovs, Norton and Cason earned All-South/Southeast Region Team recognition.
Guilford's Matthew McKeown finished in 32:45.37, five seconds in front of teammate Joshua Farrar (32:50.91), which was the second-fastest time of his career. Patrick Westervelt ran his career-best finish (33:23.11) to round out Guilford's scoring, helping the team finish 12th out of 23 teams overall.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will take place next Saturday, Nov. 17, at LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. at 11:00 a.m.
