GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College juniors Andris Goncarovs and Chad Norton finished first and second, respectively, among 135 runners at the Hagan Stone Cross Country Classic at Hagan Stone Park Saturday. The Quakers finished third of 16 teams.
Goncarovs completed the eight-kilometer circuit in 26 minutes, 19.20 seconds to claim Guilford's first individual win of the season and the Quakers' first since 2011. He outkicked Norton by less than eight seconds as Norton finished in 26:27.50. Goncarovs' time ranks 13th in school history among eight-kilometer times, while Norton's effort is 16th.
Guilford junior David Cason also earned a top-10 finish, crossing the finish line seventh in 27:27.53. Senior Richard Rogers (30:38.17) and rookie Matthew McKeown (31:36.86) rounded out the Quakers' scorers and placed fourth and fifth on the team, respectively.
Howard Community College claimed the team title by seven points over Duke University's club team. The Quakers had the highest finish by a four-year varsity team.
The Quakers' cross country team is back in action at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships at the Peakview Course in Harrisonburg, Va., Oct. 27.
