GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Andris Goncarovs was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's runner of the week. He also received Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday, presented weekly by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Goncarovs nearly won his first event of the season this past Saturday as he competed in the UNC Wilmington Invitational. He finished with a time of 15:43.14, which was just 0.2 seconds behind the winner from East Carolina University. Despite finishing in second place, Goncarovs' time was the second-fastest over a five-kilometer course in school history.
Following his impressive performance at the UNC Wilmington Invitational, Goncarovs, a certified lifeguard, and assistant coach Kimberly Cash rescued a drowning man on September 8th at Kure Beach, N.C.
Head coach Danny Cash's team placed third at the UNC Wilmington meet and is back in action September 28th at the Charlotte Invitational.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
