Guilford Men Compete in the Winston-Salem State Open

WINSTON-SALEM, NC---Guilford College's men's indoor track team competed in the Winston-Salem State Open at the JDL Fast Track. The meet featured NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA schools from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Guilford junior Alex Smith broke the school's triple jump record, leaping 13.13 meters on his final jump.  Smith narrowly edged teammate Yashua Clemons' record by .01 meters on his second jump before achieving his longest jump on his final attempt.

Fellow junior C.J. Green matched his personal-best time in the 200-meters (23.74 seconds), finishing 20th out of 47 competitors and first among Division III contestants.  Green also eclipsed the team high in the 60-meter dash (7.22 seconds), finishing third in his preliminary heat and 18th overall.

The Quakers' men's distance medley team of David Cason, Yashua Clemons, Andris Goncarovs, and Chad Norton finished fourth with a time of 10:57.33, just over two seconds from the second all-time mark in Guilford history.

Goncarovs led the Quakers in the 3,000-meter run (9:02.40) with a fifth-place finish. Norton (9:05.32) was eighth and Cason (9:13.82) finished 10th.

Coach Danny Cash's team returns to action January 25-26 at the Liberty University Open in Lynchburg, Va.
