GREENSBORO, N.C. - Andris Goncarvos collected the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. The award is presented weekly by the Guilford Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Goncarvos also earned the honor once during the recent cross country season.
Goncarvos, a distance runner on the Quakers' track and field team, placed eighth in the mile at the JDL College Kick-off Classic Dec. 1, where Guilford was the lone Division III school. His time of 4:29.50 stands fifth in school history and is the fourth-fastest in NCAA Division III after the season's opening weekend. Goncarvos also competed in the 5,000-meter run in 15:32.64, which placed fourth in the race and is the 13th-fastest time in Division III. His time also ranks third in school history.
Coach Danny Cash's Quakers will return to action on Jan. 20 in the Winston-Salem State Open.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at the New Garden Friends School.
