Guilford's Smith Wins 100 at VertKlasse Meeting
HIGH POINT, N.C. – For the second straight week, Guilford College sprinter Johnathan Smith scored a victory versus higher NCAA competition as he won the 100-meter dash in Saturday's VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University. Running in the Performance Division race, Smith posted a wind-aided time of 10.51 seconds to win the 16-man race against mostly NCAA Division II opposition. He won the 113-man 200-meter dash March 17 at the Wake Forest Open.
Smith placed second in the Performance Division 200 to High Point's Evan Emery, who won the race in a wind-aided 20.87 seconds. Smith's time was 21.10 seconds, tops among NCAA Division III runners.
While the wind readings precluded Smith from setting individual records in the 100 and 200, he was part of the Quakers' record-setting 4x100 relay that placed sixth in 44.39 seconds. Smith anchored the team that also included C.J. Green, Kash Alberts and Mike Williams.
Guilford's Josh Farrar broke his own school standard in the 400-meter dash. Running in the Participation Division, the junior clocked a record 50.23 seconds to place fourth in the 23-man field, tops among Division III contestants. He also led off the Quakers' 4x400 relay that posted the top Division III time and a ninth-place finish in 3:27.85, the fifth-fastest mark in school history.
Other men's highlights include David Cason's seventh-place finish in the Performance Division 5,000. He had the fastest Division III time (15:25.21) in the race and fifth-best mark in school history. Zavier Watson placed fifth in the Participation Division long jump with a leap of 5.97 meters, eighth-best all-time at Guilford.
The Quakers compete at the Raleigh Relays March 30-31.
