WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Guilford College's Johnathan Smith won the 200-meter dash and placed sixth in the 100 at the Wake Forest Open Saturday.
The sophomore, who finished second in the 60 at last week's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, lowered his own school record in both disciplines. He had the best time (21.26) among 113 mostly Division I contestants in the 200 and topped Radford University freshman Joseph Betts by two-tenths of a second. Smith took sixth among 63 sprinters in the 100 with a time of 10.68 seconds, tops among Division III contestants. He qualified for Saturday's finals with a school-record 10.53 in Friday's preliminaries.
Guilford's Chad Norton ran the second-fastest 10,000 time (32:34.88) in Guilford history to place third in the 22-man field. His personal-best time was tops among Division III runners. Teammate Dylan Skinner took fifth in the 800 with a time of 1:54.43, which stands second all-time at Guilford. His mark was the fastest Division III time in the 97-man field.
Guilford competes in High Point University's VertKlasse Meeting March 24.
