GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Johnathan Smith collected the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. The award is presented weekly by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Smith, a sprinter on the Quakers' track and field team, placed ninth among 58 contestants in the 60-meter dash at the Liberty University Kickoff Dec. 3 in Lynchburg, Va. His time of 7.02 seconds was the fastest NCAA Division III time at the meet and the second-fastest time in school history. Smith set the Guilford standard (7.0) in last year's Liberty Kickoff meet. He is the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) indoor champion at 55 meters and defending runner-up in the 200 meters.

Coach Bill Cason's Quakers are picked fourth in the preseason ODAC Coaches' Poll and return to action Jan. 13-14 at the Dick Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
