FOREST, Va. – Guilford College's men's tennis teams was ranked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) coaches' preseason polls released Friday.
Guilford's men collected 70 points for a third-place ranking. Seven-time defending league champion Washington and Lee University topped the survey with 10 first-place votes and 100 points. Bridgewater College was tabbed second with 82 points.
The Quakers finished the 2015-16 season with a 5-10 overall record, 5-5 in the ODAC. Guilford is 1-0 this year after a win over NCAA Division II Pfeiffer University in the fall. The team returns eight students from last year's squad, including senior captain Levi Bruff and junior Mesa Martorell. Bruff and Martorell were named Second Team All-ODAC in doubles and won their first nine matches together before dropping an 8-6 decision in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals. Bruff saw his most action at fifth singles and registered an 8-5 singles record. He led the team with an 11-6 doubles mark and 19 combined (singles & doubles) victories. Martorell, who played second singles for most of last season, recorded a 7-10 singles mark and went 10-8 in doubles.
Head coach Dave McCain's Quakers open their spring season Feb. 19 versus Greensboro College.
