Guilford Seniors Shine in 2-0 Win Over Hampden-Sydney

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Seniors Greg Carnovale and Freddy Gomez both scored a goal for Guilford College in a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over visiting Hampden-Sydney College Tuesday night.

In the 51st minute, senior Ronnie Castellanos deflected a Colin Dillon corner kick to Carnovale for his fourth goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Castellanos was tackled in the box and Guilford was awarded a penalty kick. Gomez booted the penalty kick into the net for his 12th goal of the season, 42nd of his career, and sixth in as many games.

Hampden-Sydney held a narrow advantage in shots, 11-10. Michael MacVane made four stops in net for the Quakers for his fourth shutout in five games. Blake Carrey had three saves for the Tigers before being relieved by Jeff Bone in the closing minutes.

With the win, the Quakers (10-7, 7-4 ODAC) clinched a spot in the eight-team ODAC Tournament and await announcement of their opponent later in the week.
