Gomez Tallies Twice in Men's Soccer Win Over Averett

Greg Carnovale (#2) and Freddy Gomez (7) celebrate the Quakers' first goal.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freddy Gomez's penalty kick in the 78th minute broke a 2-2 tie and sent Guilford College to a 4-2 men's soccer win over Averett University Sunday.

The Quakers (2-0) scored four second-half goals and overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit in the match played on Greensboro College's Pride Field. Gomez also scored in the 52nd minute, which tied the score at 1-1 after Leslie Pappoe gave the Cougars (0-1-1) a 1-0 halftime lead. With three tallies this year, Gomez has 33 career goals and moved into third place on Guilford's career goals list (33).

Averett tied the match in the 77th minute on a Nathan Brown goal, but Guilford took the ensuing draw down field where Gomez was fouled in the box. He slotted the penalty into the top-left corner to restore a one-goal Guilford edge. Rory Molleda added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, his first goal since 2009.

Guilford goalie Marko Mandalinic made 10 saves in his first start since 2010. The junior made five stops in both halves.

Guilford's four goals represent the most it has scored in a match since 2010. The Quakers last scored four times in a half Sept. 11, 2010, in a 5-1 win over Piedmont College.

Brown scored a goal and an assist for Averett. Keeper Justin Duksis made two saves.

Coach Jeff Bateson's club visits North Carolina Wesleyan College Wednesday (9/5) afternoon.
