GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College sophomore Drew Thompson earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) Golfer of the Week Award Monday. He also garnered the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award, which is presented weekly by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Thompson joins teammate Noah Ratner as Guilford winners of this weekly ODAC honors.
Thompson helped Guilford place second at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial with a 72-72-144 (+4) that placed fourth in the 90-man field. He carded the Quakers' low score in both rounds and had the low score among the 36 ODAC contestants in the field. Thompson lowered his season stroke average to a team-best 73.90, which ranks second in the ODAC.
Guilford placed second at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Oct. 23, which featured many of the top teams in Division III. Methodist University shot 293-285-578 to capture its record seventh tournament title at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club. The host Quakers fell 14 strokes shy of its third straight O'Briant-Jensen crown and took second in the 16-team field for the fourth time in tournament history.
Coach Corey Maggard's team returns to action Nov. 3-4 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C. The Quakers, ranked 11th in the latest Golfstat.com Division III ratings, have won one tournament and have four top-10 finishes this fall.
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at local schools.
