Golfers Rally to Win Ted Keller Memorial Title

Guilford College - 2012 Ted Keller Memorial Champions

GLEN ALLEN, Va. – Guilford College's men's golf team overcame a four-stroke deficit to win the 11-team Ted Keller Memorial Sunday. The Quakers carded the second round's low score (300) at the par-72, 6,882-yard Hunting Hawk Golf Club and defeated first-round leader Randolph-Macon College by 11 strokes.

Guilford shot 294-300-594 to win its first tournament of the year. Tournament host Randolph-Macon (290-315-605) placed second, four strokes in front of Franklin & Marshall College (299-310-609). Washington and Lee University (314-310-624) edged Hampden-Sydney College (307-318-625) for fourth place.

Coach Corey Maggard's Quakers, ranked fifth in the current Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll, placed four students among the top-10 finishers in the 66-man field. Sophomores Drew Thompson (75-74-149) and Travis Tolbert (77-72-149) both finished at five-over 149 and shared sixth place individually. Tolbert's even-par round was Sunday's second-lowest score. Teammates Ben Pinkleton (75-75-150) and Nick Shedd (71-79-150) were one shot back and shared ninth place. Guilford's Noah Ratner shot 73-79-152 and placed 14th.

Randolph-Macon's Kyle Fuller maintained his first-round lead and earned medalist honors with a one-over 70-75-145. Ferrum College's Scott Obenshain fired a three-under 69 Sunday, the tournament's low score, and placed second with a 78-69-147. Guilford's Dallas Page, one of five Quakers playing as individuals, shared third place after firing 73-75-148.

Guilford returns to action next Sunday (10/14) at the 54-hole Golfweek D3 Preview at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Florida, site of the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships.
