GREENSBORO, N.C. – Recent Guilford College graduate Peter Latimer '10 won his international golf debut Wednesday playing for Scotland in the 2010 Men's Home Internationals Championship in Wales. Latimer edged Wales' Rhys Pugh, 1 up, on the opening day of match play among the four nations of the United Kingdom. Wales defeated Scotland, 8-7, in a tightly played opener that featured two draws and four matches decided on the final hole, including Latimer's.
Latimer, a 2010 PING First Team All-American, wrapped up a brilliant Guilford career in May with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. He has enjoyed a successful summer on the Scottish amateur circuit, including a win in the 2010 East of Scotland Men's Open Amateur Championship that helped secure his selection to the national team. Latimer is ranked 356th in the current R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings, which stands seventh among Scottish golfers.
Latimer and his teammates face England Thursday on the second of three days of competition. England, the 2009 Home Internationals winner, defeated Ireland, 11-4, Wednesday.
The Ashburnham Golf Club hosts the match-play championship for the third time.
