Greensboro, NC (09/30/03) -- Methodist's Adam Horton (Chesapeake, VA) earned medalist honors and helped the Monarchs to the team title Tuesday in the 16th Annual Tom O'Briant Memorial Golf Tournament at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club. Horton, a junior, shot a one-under-par 69 in Tuesday's final round to finish with a two-day 141 (+1). He outdistanced Oglethorpe senior Trent Erb (Athens, GA) by two strokes and helped the Monarchs to a three-shot win over Oglethorpe, 586-589.

Methodist, a nine-time NCAA Division III national champion, claimed the O'Briant for the first time. The Monarchs are ranked first in the September 10 Precept Division III Coaches' Poll, just ahead of Oglethorpe and Ohio Wesleyan, which finished seventh at the O'Briant. New rankings are due out Wednesday. The O'Briant featured nine of the top-20 teams in the Precept poll, plus four of the last five NCAA Division III national champions.

Methodist junior Mike Townsend (Garner, NC), who held a one-stroke lead after firing a 71 Monday, shot 75 Tuesday to share sixth place with sophomore teammate Cory Schneider (Sebring, OH) and Guilford sophomore Daniel Day (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire). Junior John Sjoberg's (Three River Falls, MN) 76 provided the Monarchs' fourth score Tuesday. He finished tied for 31st with a two-day 155. Senior James Stewart (Advance, NC) finished tied for 36th at 156.

Tournament host Guilford shot the event's low round Tuesday (286) and finished third in the 18-team field with a two-round 591. Guilford sophomore Brant Stovall (Lawsonville, NC/Walnut Cove) carded the tourney's low round Tuesday with a two-under 68 to finish third at 144. Quakers' freshman Colin Clark (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) bounced back from an opening-round 80 with a 69 Tuesday and finished ninth.

Oglethorpe had four of the 90-player tournament's low-16 scores. Junior Corey Garner (Clayton, GA) shot a five-over 145 to finish fifth while sophomore teammates Joe Green (Jacksonville, FL) and Jonathan Davis (Kennett Square, PA) shared 16th with two-day scores of 152. The Stormy Petrels have finished second in each of the last three O'Briant Memorial Tournaments.

Methodist's victory ended Duke's 'B' team's record three-year tournament winning streak. The Division I Blue Devils, winners of a record four O'Briant Memorials, finished 13 strokes behind Emory in fifth place.

This year's tournament was played on the par-70, 6,671-yard Pete Dye-designed layout in northwest Greensboro. Guilford hosted the same tournament from 1978-87 when it was called the Guilford College Invitational.
