GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Nov. 11-Nov. 17
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College senior Josh Pittman earned his first Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award of 2012-13 after his performance in the Daly Seven Hotels Invitational Nov. 16-17. The prize is presented by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Pittman, a 6-1 starting guard, led Guilford in points and assists in both games, earning the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award. The Quakers opened their season against Southern Virginia University where Pittman tallied in double figures, scoring 15 points and a game-high five assists in the 71-67 victory. He gave Guilford the lead for good with a long bounce pass through the lane to Jarred Hinton, who laid the ball in for a 65-64 lead with 1:54 remaining. In the tournament final against William Peace University, Pittman dished six assists and drained four three-pointers on the way to 18 points in 93-56 win. His performance over the weekend moved him into 27th place on Guilford's career scoring list with 1,080 points. He needs 14 points to pass Jordan Snipes '07 for 26th place. Pittman also moved into 18th place among the school's career assists leaders (194).
The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and the promotion of Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes' community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department
