GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Wesleyan College's Jimmy Ziemke tallied six hits and Corey King drove in three runs on the afternoon as Guilford College dropped a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contests to Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Marlins won game one, 15-6, and the nightcap, 5-2.
The Quakers (13-12, 1-6 ODAC) opened the contest with three-straight hits in the bottom of the first inning, driving in two runs in a rally capped with two outs when Mitchell Stumpo reached on an error on the throw from the shortstop.
The Marlins (10-10, 3-4 ODAC) scored at least one run from the second to the ninth frames, led by a four-run rally in the fifth inning where a Justin Erby double led off the inning. A Randy Neisz single followed, driving Erby home. The Marlins posted three fielder's choice plays in the inning.
The Quakers rallied in the bottom of the sixth, posting five hits in the frame with three hits coming before the first out. Andrew Muster drove home the first run on a bloop single to center field. Logan Washle represented the fifth hit, a single up the middle to drive in the second run. Trevor Denton added runs for the Quakers in the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run down the left field line after Rocco Wilcox led off the inning with a triple to center field.
The Marlins posted a run in the top of the second inning off a Brandon Kussmaul fielder's choice after two hits in the inning. Justin Erby connected on a two-run home run to right field one inning later to extended the lead while the Marlins faced the minimum through four and one-third innings.
After a Ryan Hill walk and a Josh Shepherd hit-by-pitch, Wilcox moved the runners into scoring position. Denton knocked a two-out double into center field to drive Wilcox home and slice the lead in half.
Denton led the Quakers at the plate, finish five-for-nine over the doubleheader with four total RBI, including notching Guilford's lone multi-hit effort in game two. Rocco Wilcox hit three-for-five in game one while Josh Shepherd finished game one two-for-four.
Logan Jones (2-1) took the game one loss for the Quakers in a four and two-third innings effort, walking four and striking out two. John Todd (4-2) took the game two in loss in a five-inning effort where he struck out two and walked two. Eric Yost threw the final four innings, fanning two and walking two.
Patrick Monteverde (2-1) claimed the game one win for Virginia Wesleyan in a five and one-third innings effort where he walked one and struck out one. Nick Bay (3-1) claimed the game two win, fanning three and walking two. Riley Koonce collected his fourth save of the season, fanning one and surrendering just one hit in the final inning.
The Quakers take to the road Wednesday, stepping out of league play to face Bluefield State College for a 5 p.m. contest.
