Late Quakers Rally Falls Short at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg College's Will Hylton tallied two RBI and a double on a two-for-three day as Guilford College dropped a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Lynchburg, 4-1.

Hylton sparked Lynchburg's first rally in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out single to left field as the Hornets placed runner at the corners. Hylton stole single during the next at-bat, which drew Nathan Sharp home to tally a 2-0 lead. Tyler Wood hit a single to bring home another two-out run for Lynchburg one inning later in a play that closed the inning after Will Harris was put out at third base after the throw to home plate to put out the runner scoring was late.

The Quakers produced a pair of two-out singles in the next half-inning as Andrew Brann and Mitchell Stumpo connected at the dish. The Quakers placed runners at the corners before Lynchburg rallied to retire the Quakers in the inning.

Hylton provided insurance for the Hornets in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out double down the right field line, bringing home Sharp after reaching on an error earlier in the inning.

The Quakers rallied in the final inning after Metts led off the inning with single. Stumpo elongated the inning after reaching on an error with one out, which led to a Logan Washle double down the right field line which drove home a run and kept the Quakers alive. Zack Engelmann rallied for his second strikeout of the inning to represent the final out to retire the Quakers.

Guilford's meat of the order tallied five of the Quakers' eight hits as Stumpo produced one of Guilford's two multi-hit efforts of the afternoon, hitting two-for-four. Metts also finished two-for-four while Josh Shepherd finished one-for-three, adding a stolen base.

Eric Yost (1-3) took the loss for the Quakers in a seven and two-third innings effort where he struck out six and walked two. Logan Jones pitched the final out of the bottom of the eighth inning.

Engelmann (4-1) claimed the complete-game win for the Hornets, striking out four and walking one.

The Quakers and Hornets duel again tomorrow afternoon at Guilford's McBane Field for a 1 p.m. ODAC contest.
