Denton, Hill Homer as Guilford Rally Falls Short Against William Peace

GREENSBORO, N.C. - William Peace University's Alex Scott hit a home run and tallied five RBI as Guilford College dropped a Saturday afternoon contest to William Peace, 14-11.

Bats on both side came out hot in the first inning as the Pacers (3-2) produced three runs on two hits while the Quakers (2-2) countered one half-inning later with two runs on two hits thanks to Joe Metts' two-RBI, two-out double.

An Alex Scott two-run home run sparked the Pacers in the top of the third inning with one-out. Stewart Laws responded one half-inning later with a sacrifice fly with two outs. 

The Quakers countered a three-run fourth inning with a Ryan Hill one-out single after Logan Washle opening the inning with a double. The Quakers sparked a three-run rally with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning as Metts and Washle drove in a run a piece with Washle driving in the final run on a two-out sacrifice fly.

William Peace posted a five-run rally in the top of the sixth frame, capped by Alec Allred's two-run double. Guilford responded with a Trevor Denton single with one out in the next half-inning.

Guilford's bats came alive in the bottom of the eighth stanza as Hill and Denton both connected on home runs to left field as the Quakers opened the inning with four straight hits. Denton produced a three-run home run for the second home run of the frame to bring the Quakers within three runs. Washle led off the bottom of the ninth with a single in an effort to spark a comeback bid, but William Peace rallied to retire the next three batters.

Denton finished three-for-four with four RBI while Hill hit three-for-five with two RBI. Wilcox was the remaining Quakers' bat with three hits, batting three-for-five while Metts tallied three RBI on his two-for-four afternoon.

Scott led the Pacers, batting four-for-four while Tyler Tilson finished two-for-five, driving in three runs.

Chase Mitchell (0-1) claimed the loss for Guilford, throwing three innings and striking out four batters in his first start of the season. Ty Walser led the bullpen with three and two-third innings, giving up one run on three hits while fanning three.

Cameron High (2-0) took the win for William Peace in a five-inning effort where he walked four and struck out one, giving up six runs on seven hits.

The Quakers and Pacers wrap up a three-game multi-site series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Center in Cary, N.C.
