GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College junior John Macon Smith collected the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) first Baseball Player Hitter of the Week Award Monday. He was also named the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Smith, a 6-2, 200-pound center fielder, went five-for-nine with a homer and three runs batted in (RBI) in the Quakers' season-opening split with Piedmont (Ga.) College Feb. 2-3. The 2012 Second Team All-ODAC pick started his season by blasting a three-run homer in his first at-bat of Guilford's 8-4 loss. He finished the day with three hits, a stolen base, one run and three RBI. The following afternoon Smith scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning of Guilford's 5-4 comeback win. He had two hits on the day and also earned a walk. Through the Quakers' first two games, Smith is batting a team-leading .556.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school's student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and participation in Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes' community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department.
