GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Ben Esser won the Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday.
The 5-11, 175-pound second baseman helped the Quakers to a 3-1 week with 10 hits in 17 at bats. He logged a .588 batting average, a .632 on-base percentage, six RBI and one homer. Esser had three multiple-hit performances on the week, including four-hit outings against both Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon College. He had a season-high four hits, including his first homer of the year, and three runs batted in (RBI) in Guilford's road loss to Roanoke April 3. He had two hits and an RBI in the April 4 win over Averett University. Esser helped Guilford to its first doubleheader sweep of Randolph-Macon since 2004 as he went four-for-four with two RBI in the 6-4 opening game win April 7. He also successfully handled all 23 chances in the field.
Esser's .341 hitting percentage is fourth among fellow Quakers and he sits fifth on the team in RBI (18) and slugging percentage (.409). He has a .962 fielding percentage and only four errors on the season.
Coach Nick Black's '02 club (19-14, 7-5 ODAC) returns to the field Wednesday (4/11) versus conference-foe Roanoke. The Quakers have matched their highest win total since 2009.
