Guilford Whacks Ferrum, 14-0, in Rain-Shortened Affair
GREENSBORO, N.C. – D.J. Phillips went three-for-four with a homer and three RBI in Guilford College's 14-0, rain-shortened baseball win over Ferrum College Thursday.
Phillips' first homer of the year, a three-run shot, keyed the Quakers' (12-8) seven-run third inning. Guilford batted around and recorded seven of its 17 hits in the frame.
Zack Montalbano added an RBI single in the third and also had a run-scoring double in Guilford's three-run fourth that opened an 11-1 advantage. He was one of six Quakers with two or more hits. Teammates John Macon Smith and Kent Peterson added three hits apiece.
Rookie Justin Morrison scattered three hits over five and two-thirds innings before the rains fell fast and hard. He improved to 3-2 with his first college shutout. He yielded only three singles and a walk and had two strikeouts.
Sophomore Josh Motto (2-1) took the loss for Ferrum (13-7).
Guilford visits Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington and Lee University Saturday (3/17) for a noon doubleheader.
