On Saturday, April 28 from 1-4 p.m., the Guilford College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host the first Sport Expo & Unity Cup event at the college. The event welcomes athletes from the Greensboro-High Point sector of the Special Olympics (SO). The idea is to promote inclusion play and camaraderie between students from both colleges and SO athletes. It is Guilford’s second event with Special Olympians this academic year, and reflects the partnership between NCAA Division III and the Special Olympics.
For the event’s first two hours, SO athletes will participate in a Sport Expo, rotating between stations displaying: football, flag football, kickball, and volleyball. The highlight of the day will come at 3:00 p.m., with the Unity Cup soccer game. Guilford and Greensboro College’s men’s soccer teams will play together with SO athletes, with the Unity Cup going to the winning team.
Guilford and Greensboro students are volunteering to participate with the SO athletes throughout the Sport Expo and to cheer for them or play with them at the Unity Cup game. Faculty and staff members are invited to watch the events and the Unity Cup match. Although the event is hosted by Guilford’s SAAC, volunteers from both the Guilford and Greensboro College communities are welcome. Volunteers will receive a complementary t-shirt to commemorate the event. Shirts will also be on sale for the benefit of the Special Olympics. If you are interested in volunteering and becoming a part of this event, please contact: SAAC Vice President, Meredith Foscue (firstname.lastname@example.org) or SAAC Advisor, Emily Gann (email@example.com).
